Markings: The left side of the slide is marked “COMBAT / COMMANDER”, “COLT”, “.38 SUPER / AUTOMATIC” and with the Rampant Colt logo. The right side of the slide is marked “COLT’S COMBAT COMMANDER”. The right side of the frame is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.” and “70BS63604”. The barrel is marked “COLT SUPER .38 AUTO”. The left front of the trigger guard is marked “U” and the rear with “VP” in a triangle. The right front of the trigger guard is marked with “F”.
Barrel Length: 4 ¼”
Sights / Optics: This pistol is mounted with a flat topped “U” notch dovetailed into the top of the slide. The front sight is a short serrated ramp with a rounded front edge that is fixed to a flat on the top front of the slide.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered walnut with gold colored Rampant Colt medallions near the tops of the grips. The checking is sharp to the touch and without mars. The grips rate in about Excellent overall condition.
Type of Finish: The sides of the slide have a polished deep blue finish. The top and bottom of the slide and the underside of the frame and front strap have a matte black finish. The sides of the frame have a blue finish that isn’t quite as deep of a blue as that on the slide – we think this is from nickel content in the metal. The mainspring housing is serrated.
Finish Originality: The finish is original.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion, but there are two shallow rings near the muzzle.
Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 97% of its metal finish. There is finish loss on the underside of the slide from rubbing on the frame, a few light handling marks in the slide, trigger guard, grip safety and front strap, a scratch in the left side of the frame below the slide release and a scratch in the right rear of the slide. Four of the serrations on the left side of the slide are ground flat and several on the right side have their lower edges ground flat – we think this was done at the factory, and the markings are too sharp for the pistol to have been refinished. The mainspring housing serrations are sharp with a tiny spot of light wear and the hammer serrations are sharp. One of the grip screws is distressed and the others are sharp. The markings are clear with crisp lettering on the slide and the right side of the frame. Overall, this gun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: This pistol has a tight slide and a crisp trigger. The hammer is round. The action functions correctly. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with one nine round blued magazine with a black matte finished floorplate marked “COLT” and “SUPER / .38 AUTO”. The magazine shows light wear and light handling marks in the floorplate. The magazine is in about Fine condition.
Our Assessment: This is a Colt Combat Commander made in the 1977 chambered in .38 Super. Colt made a Commander version of its 1911A1 pistol starting in 1950 with a lightweight alloy frame and a 4 ¼” barrel, but changed its name to Lightweight Commander in 1970 to distinguish it from the newly introduced all steel Combat Commander. We suspect that the alloy frame was probably sufficient for the .45 ACP cartridge, but probably not for the higher pressures of the .38 Super. This pistol has a blued finish on the sides of the slide and frame and a matte black finish on the top and underside of the slide and the underside of the frame. The grips are checkered walnut with gold colored Rampant Colt medallions. This pistol is in about Fine condition with about 97% of its finish remaining. This pistol is perfect for a carry gun. Its 4 ¼” barrel isn’t too long for carrying and is long enough to provide a decent sight radius. The Combat Commander has a full-size grip frame and the serrated mainspring housing will help ensure a firm grip. On the other hand, they aren’t making this model any more, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the collectors outbid the shooters on this one.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This handgun CANNOT be transferred as a dealer sale in California but CAN be sold as a Private Party Transfer (PPT) at our Simi Valley shop. All cartridge firing handguns (even C&R's and antiques) sold to a California resident must be DROS'd. This does not apply to out of state residents.
