White wire shelving is used to organize closet space and can be used in conjunction with telescoping hanger rods. White wire shelving can be cut to size and installed in a variety of ways, making it easy for you to create an assembly of shelves that fit your closet. They often attach to walls with screws and a hooked hanging bracket. Wobbly or unsteady wire shelving is caused by uneven installation of hanging brackets on the wall and hanging brackets that are too small to effectively hold up the weight of a heavy storage load. Fix your unsteady wire shelving by adding support braces and setting the original hook brackets in an even parallel line on the wall.
Remove the mounting clips and end brackets by prying out the pin nails with a claw hammer or taking off the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
Measure the desired shelf height on the wall, starting from the floor up, and make a mark with a pencil. Mark this height at even intervals across the wall where the shelf will be installed, with a mark indicating each shelf end. Check to see if the marks are in a parallel line, as the floor may be uneven. If any of the marks are not in line, erase them and draw them so that they are at the same height as the other marks.
Use a metal straight edge and the level to ensure that the line is straight and even, and then snap a chalk line along the marks to make an installation guide line for the shelving.
Measure 2 1/2 inches in from the ends of the shelf and 5/8 inch below the shelf line on the wall and make a mark. Measure and make a mark every 2 1/2 inches across the wall until you meet the other end of the line you drew. This is where you will install the end wire shelving toggle anchors. A 24-inch shelf will need three toggle anchors. A 36-inch shelf will need four toggle anchors and a 48-inch shelf will need five anchors.
Drill a 1 1/4 inch deep, 5/16 inch diameter hole on the 2 1/2 inch marks or the toggle anchor marks.
Fold the tabs of the shelving toggle anchor together and insert them into the first hole. Gently tap the anchor with a hammer to make the back of the anchor even or flush against the wall. Push the black key of the shelving toggle anchor into the hole of the anchor to pop the toggle tabs back into their original position. Pull the key straight back out of the shelving toggle anchor.
Set the wire shelving on the toggle anchor hook and push it down to snap it in place.
Slide an end bracket on the ends of the shelf where it touches an adjacent wall. Draw in the screw holes on the end bracket to mark them on the adjacent wall with a pencil. Remove the shelf from the toggle anchors.
Drill a 1/4-inch hole on the marks. Tap a plastic wall anchor into each screw hole with a hammer. Set the self back onto the toggle anchors with the end brackets attached. Align the screw holes with the wall anchor holes and drive a screw into each hole with a screwdriver.
Measure and make a mark every three feet along the shelf. This is where you need to install the support braces. Support braces will give your shelf extra support to make it steady. If you intend to place heavy object on the shelves, instead of marking every three feet, mark every two feet.
Hook the rounded end of the shelf support brace onto the top front rail or the lip of the shelf at the marks. Tilt the flat end of the support brace back until it touches the wall. Mark the screw hole of the support brace with a pencil.
Tilt the support brace out of the way and drill a 1/4-inch hole on the mark. Tap a wall anchor into the screw hole with a hammer. Tilt the flat end of the support brace back up against the wall. Drive a screw into the screw hole and wall anchor with a screwdriver and make the back of the flat end even or flush up against the wall. Add the other support braces in the same manner.
